THE EXECUTIVE HEALTH AND SAFETY COUNCIL OF BC – ROUND TABLE 2020

On November 10^th and 12th, the Executive Health and Safety Council will be holding the 10th annual “BC Safety Charter Round Table”. Signatories from across the province will learn, teach and share their experiences with each other on how to build stronger safety cultures and help make BC the safest province in Canada to work in.

This year’s agenda will be similar to previous years, with a panel discussion, round table topics, and a powerful keynote presentation. The event will be capped with a “virtual networking” event and presentations.

The Board of Directors is proud to announce that Mark Collins, President and CEO of BC Ferries will be the Keynote speaker. Mark will be talking about his foremost safety concern – complacency. He will discuss how BC Ferries took the lessons learned from the tragic sinking of the Queen of the North in 2006 and has leveraged them to grow and modify the company’s safety culture. After the presentation there will be a Q&A with attendees.

The 2020 Round Table is being held virtually this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Tickets to the Round Table are included in your membership. If you require extra tickets, they will be sold on a first-come-first-served basis. As this year’s event is expected to have a large turnout, please register early. Keynote: Mark Collins

President & CEO, BC Ferries

Born in an island community, and with 35 years’ of marine experience, Mark understands the importance of a reliable ferry service to people’s lives and the local economy. Before becoming President & CEO, Mark held leadership positions with BC Ferries for 11 years and also served as President of both Rolls Royce Marine Brazil and Italy. He has an MBA in Transport and Logistics from UBC, a certificate in Strategic Leadership from Oxford, a BA in Marine Geography from Saint Marys, and a Diploma of Mechanical (Marine) Engineering from Memorial University. In addition to several past directorships, he presently serves on the boards of Interferry, Green Marine and is the chair of the Canadian Ferry Association.

Panel Discussions

Hear from a panel of 3 BC Safety Charter Signatories as they discuss how the COVID-19 pandemic affected their businesses over the summer. Learn how they overcame issues like temporary layoffs, staff working from home, and supply chain shortages. Hear first hand stories about how they kept their businesses operational and staff employed, while navigating new health and safety expectations. This panel has a wealth of experience and will show how the issues they faced crossed industry and regional barriers.

Panelist: Brian Wall

Chief Executive Officer, AEM (Anodyne Electronics Manufacturing Corp.)

Brian draws from the leadership lessons of John Maxwell and the inspiration of his family as he quarterbacks AEM’s cohesive team. Ultimately accountable for the successful and profitable growth of the organization and its people, Brian challenges his team to do good and be meaningful in everything they do.

“I believe in putting employees first. If employees aren’t supported to be the best they can be, customers and the success of the organization are just a dream.”

Brian describes himself as determined (and a wee bit stubborn), going after what he wants with decision and vigour. His career began as a commercial pilot—a dream since being a young boy—but he returned to school wanting to be successful in business. Brian has since served thirty years in senior leadership roles for a variety of organizations, most recently as AEM’s VP of Operations. As a past auxiliary member of the RCMP, he volunteered 400-600 hours a year.

On weekends, Brian spends the endless joys of summer relaxing on the Kettle River with family, friends, and his dog, Noki. He hopes to one day ride some of the best roller coasters in the world.

“Life is a lesson. Take it all in while you can. Have a willingness to recognize that you can always do better tomorrow than you did today.”

Brian still—always will—loves to fly.

Panelist: Dann Konkin

President and CEO, Ampco Manufacturers Inc.

Dann Konkin is the President and CEO of Ampco Manufacturers Inc., which is a 53 year old B.C. family owned and operated diverse manufacturing entity which specializes in high resolution, tight tolerance / high quality screen printing and wide format digital print manufacturing, contract assembly of electronic components and circuit boards and is a Third Party Logistics (3PL) supplier providing over 7,500 SKU’s of materials to clients throughout Canada, United States, Mexico and Australia.

Dann started his career with the Company in 1974 after graduating Capilano College and BCIT in the Business Administration program. By 1986, he became the Company’s General Manager which employed 10 people and then in 1995, he was promoted to President and CEO. The Company employed a total of 40 people.
In 2003, he opened a sourcing office in Hong Kong, MTM Pacific Ltd., which sources parts and components for South East Asia for the Transportation and medical markets in North America. He brought in a well-defined management accountability structure which has serves as a baseline for the management of the Corporate Strategic Planning.

Ranked as the largest Digital Print/Screen Print manufacturer in B.C. and the third largest in Canada, Ampco is the leader of their product groups for a variety of business applications.

Today, Ampco and its subsidiaries, employs 115 employees generating over $22 million in sales.
Dann has also given back to the Community by serving as a Trustee and the Chair for the B.C. Sports Hall of Fame and Museum as well as the B.C. Sports Hall of Fame’s Foundation Board. He has also served as a Director for the CKNW Orphan’s Fund board, The First Tee of Greater Vancouver, The Challenger Baseball Charity Golf Classic as well as the Founder’s Cup Charity Golf Classic and its Foundation Board.
Dann is married with 3 grown children and he resides on the North Shore.

Panelist: Don Bayda

Chief Executive Officer, F&M Installations Ltd.

As Chief Executive Officer of FMI, Don is responsible for directing and providing leadership for the company’s growth, ensuring that FMI continues to develop and sustain superior performance, a dynamic safety culture, quality initiatives and solid integrity. Don oversees the company’s day-day operating activities, which includes revenue and sales growth, and cost & margin control with monthly, quarterly and annual financial goal management.

Professional Achievements

With over 26 years of heavy industrial project experience, Don was instrumental in achieving significant company success through the development of a strong matrix organization. This organization supports construction activities in the areas of safety, environment, quality, project controls, procurement and project management.

Award of Excellence recipient for the effort of implementing the company’s COAA Work Face Planning Process.

Involvement & Participation – organizations and groups

Active Member of ECABC. Sharing of information that our companies are able to do through the ECA to aid in the development of the industry. In 2019 Don was elected as an Alternate Director to the ECABC Board of Directors.

Industry & Community Involvement

Set up the FMI Legacy Committee, which provides support to the Canadian Cancer Society, Canadian Mental Health Association, and KidSport™ Nanaimo.
Developed a bike park, walking path, and community garden for the Tsal’alh First Nation.
Member or past member of the following industry bodies:
- Executive Health & Safety Council of BC (5 years);
- COAA – Work Face Planning Construction Performance Committee (2 years);
- VRCA (10+ years);
- Canadian Electrical Contractors Association (10+ years);

Table Discussions

The 2020 Table Discussions will be driven by Signatories who have created strong safety cultures in their organizations and want to share what they have done with others. Topics will be explored in small groups, with the host explaining what has been done and what the effect has been to the company’s safety culture. A round table discussion will take place, wherein leaders can compare experiences, and create a list of best practices. One attendee will be designated as the “presenter” and will bring the findings back to the other groups to share and explain their findings.

Perry McDougall

President, Goodwin Industrial Electric Ltd.

“Onboarding of New and Young Workers” is a topic that is often discussed by Executive Health and Safety Council members. Experience our table hosts personal safety journey, lessons he learned along the way, how he came to be in his role, what safety means to his organisation, and how he mentors his staff to share his principles in safety. After his presentation there will be a workgroup discussion on members methodologies, culminating in a list of ways that you can build safety onboarding into your business.

A little about Perry:

Perry McDougall is the President of Goodwin industrial Electric, and has been involved with the organization for 32 years. His daily tasks include but are not limited to business development; marketing, quoting large projects, contract negotiations, and deeply involved with the safety culture.

Perry sits on the board of directors with the following organizations:

Granby group of companies (Goodwin Industrial Electric, Bridge Electric, Argo Industrial Electric, and Vanguard equipment)
BC Electrical Association
Secretary Treasurer of the Executive Health and Safety Council of BC

Is a member of the steering committee for the industrial manufacturing sector for the BC industry training Authority.

Has been a Signatory member of the BC Safety Charter since March of 2014.

Likes outside the business world include Golf, Ski, and hikes in the North Shore Mountains. Most of all the biggest passion in my life is his daughter Emma.

Jaime Pacreu

Plant Manager, Kerry Foods Delta

“The Dangers of Rushing”, will be hosted by Jaime Pacreu of Kerry Foods. Jaime will be discussing his concerns and thoughts on the habit of rushing and what steps Kerry has taken to “slow things down” while not slowing business down. Learn about how Kerry has become a world leader in safety through the use of programs like the “Safe Start” program, and what the impacts of this program have been to both Kerry and its employees.

A little about Jaimie:

Jaimie Pacreu has twenty years experience working at fast pace environments in companies such as Mondelēz International, Campbell’s Soup Canada, Pepsico Foods Canada, Procter & Gamble and General Mills. Jamie has managed new initiatives, products, technology and GMP’s as a Process Engineer. He has extensive experience managing people, budgets, reliability and safety within a High-Performance Working System as well as broad experience managing and implementing TPM.

Jaimie has shepherded the development of start-up plans for new products including product tests, new technology and market launch as well as the development of Health, Safety and Environment system and daily management systems for key performance indicator tracking.

Nick Reiach

VP Operations, Great Little Box Company

“Recover at Work” is a program that our table host Nick Reiach is passionate about. We will hear from his first-hand experience on how GLBC have set up a “Job Jar” program and the costs and benefits of bringing in an on-site physio therapist. Our host will talk about how they implemented this program, what the costs were, lessons learned and what their next steps are.

A little about Nick:

Vice President of Operations at the Great Little Box Company (GLBC), Nick Reiach has 15 years of production and warehouse experience, and 10 years as a senior executive.

The Great Little Box Company is an OSSE certified, award-winning manufacturer and distributor of custom and stock packaging solutions. It is highly regarded in BC for being a best-managed company and top employer.

In the last 10 years, GLBC has acquired eight new companies with products ranging from folding cartons to narrow web label manufacturers, as well as distributors. Nick played a key role in integrating these companies into existing operations.

Nick holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from The University of Western Ontario. In 2009, he completed the Lean Sensei Greenbelt certification program, and in 2012, he successfully completed the Lean Sensei Blackbelt certification program. Nick is a member of TEC as well as a member of the Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters Alpha group. In addition to these groups, Nick is an active Board Member in the Manufacturing Safety Alliance of BC.
