15th Annual Round Table a Great Success
On Wednesday October 8th, roughly 60 Members and guests attended the 15th Annual Round Table at the Terminal City Club in Vancouver. The morning started with a short introduction from Executive Director George Higgins, welcoming all attendees, a bit on what the Council is and does, and outlining the day to come. From there introductions of the first two speakers took place.
Up first was Dianne Rideout, Partner at Norton Rose Fullbright, who spoke on “Executive Liability and Due Diligence”. Attendees quickly got up to speed on what can happen to leaders in the event of not having proper policies (and following them) in place. This list included fines and potential jail time. Dianne also reminded leaders that they need to always document their actions.
Following Dianne was Kaylyn Kretchmer, Director of Safety Behaviour and Management Approaches at Technical Safety BC. Kaylen covered “Learnings from the Field: developing safety culture and accountability”. Kaylyn discussed building accountability for safety, why it matters, what safety culture is, and the role of leadership. To do this, she used a couple of case studies, of “what good and not so good looks like.”
After the mornings speakers a hot lunch was served, and members were able to network and discuss what they had learned. In a “change of agenda”, at the end of the lunch Members and guests assembled at the foot of the grand staircase for the annual group photo.
Following lunch, Mark Heywood, CFO of WorkSafe BC brought greetings from the Board, and introduced the first afternoon presentation on Digital Twinning and Spatial Computing.
The Afternoon presentation was facilitated by Matt Grant, Director of Digital Twin and Spatial Computing at KPMG. Matt gave a detailed presentation on what digital twinning is, and some of the ways that Members can incorporate it into their workplaces. As an added bonus, Matt incorporated 2 members of the Council in his presentation, with a “fireside chat”, discussing how they are using twinning in their current operations. On the stage, Jason Williams from YVR and Peggy Ah Yong from BC Ferries contributed and answered questions from their experiences. An engrossing conversation ensued, and everyone gained great insight in new ways to use data in their organizations.
The keynote speaker, Geoff Chutter, CEO of WhiteWater West Industries, was introduced by Amit Golan, VP Operations West of CKF. Geoff gave an overview of his global company (headquartered in BC), and talked about the health and safety culture in his company. He gave 2 examples of “when things went wrong”, which included fatalities, and covered lessons learned from them. At the end of his presentation, he answered questions from the floor. Geoff was thanked for his presentation by Vik Kohli, VP Operations and Operations Services, Enbridge.
After the presentations, members and guest adjourned to a networking reception hosted by Atlas Anchors and AEM. Many business cards were passed out, new and old connections made, and appetisers were eaten.
Thank you again to all of the sponsors of the 2025 Round Table: WorkSafeBC, Atlas Anchors, Technical Safety BC, SureWerx, Acera Insurance, AEM, KPMG, CKF and YVR. Without their support the event would not have been the same.
As a final note, especially for those who missed the Round Table, all of the presentations were recorded and will be added to the video library for future viewing / review. The videos should be available in a couple of weeks.
