THE EXECUTIVE HEALTH AND SAFETY COUNCIL OF BC – ROUND TABLE 2023

On September 27th, the Executive Health and Safety Council will be holding the 11th annual “BC Safety Charter Round Table”. Signatories from across the province will learn, teach, and share their experiences with each other on how to build stronger safety cultures and help make BC the safest province in Canada to work in.

This year’s agenda will be like previous years, with a safety discussion, round table topics, and a powerful keynote presentation. The event will be capped with a networking cocktail reception.

The Board of Directors is proud to announce that W.E. (Bill) Elkington, Executive Chairman of JV Driver Group, will be the Keynote speaker.

The 2023 Round Table is being held at the Terminal City Club, in downtown Vancouver. Tickets to the Round Table are included in your membership. Keynote: W.E. (BILL) ELKINGTON

Executive Chairman of JV Driver Group

Mr. Elkington is Executive Chairman of the JV Driver Group of companies. Born in Whitehorse, Yukon, Bill grew up in Vancouver, studied Engineering at UBC, and since 1989 has been at the forefront of growing JV Driver from a two person operation on Vancouver Island to a large, multi-national corporation that provides industrial construction, fabrication and maintenance services to the natural resource sectors, as well as commercial and heavy civil construction services, and solutions to the environmental challenges facing ship owners.

After suffering a personal loss in 2015, Bill chose to make a difference in Mental Health awareness focussing his attention on the science surrounding Mental Health, and what technologies can be proactive, predictive, and preventative. In addition, the Erika Elkington Legacy Foundation was created by Erika’s family and friends in 2016. It stands as a legacy to the person Erika was. The Foundation hopes by engaging people and communities, they can build an endowment that remains in perpetuity. The Erika Legacy Foundation will strive to build safer and inspired communities for years to come. It will partner with, and award grants to, other charitable causes that they feel capture the spirit of what Erika believed in, and what the foundation stands for.

Dr. Hilary Curry leads the People & Change Practice for KPMG in Vancouver.  For over 20 years, she has been helping organizations navigate their people and organization challenges.  Her approach to working with clients is based on her extensive experience working internationally and she brings a common-sense cultural lens to real-world challenges.  More recently, Hilary has been digging into organizational challenges in the new world of work, sharing those insights with clients, and building creative solutions to meet their unique needs.

 

Succession planning is one of those things that isn’t important until crisis hits.  It’s one piece of the talent landscape that is oftentimes overlooked and under-prepared for.   In this session we will explore the system of succession planning.  From risks and issues through to setting up your internal teams and creating the right engagement around this critical process.  This session will look at some of the theory around succession planning but underpinned by practical processes, tips and tools to make it work in the real world.

Speaker: Erin Quinn

Erin Quinn is a consultant in organizational development and the employee experience with clients in the sheet metal industry as well as major manufacturers in British Columbia’s greater Vancouver area.

With over 20 years of experience in manufacturing and over a decade in managing people, Erin’s expertise is in building human-centered solutions leveraging technology, to help make work better. She has extensive knowledge, experience and training in Leadership and Leading Change.

Erin will be presenting to the Council on Artificial Intelligence, and how it can affect corporate culture. As with all new technologies, AI can have a direct impact on workers, with questions like “will it do my job?” and “can it streamline my business processes?”. AI is expected to be rapidly implemented into many businesses, and this will be an opportunity for members to learn more about it.

President & Lead Executive Officer at Technical Safety BC

As Lead Executive Officer of Technical Safety BC, Phil guides Technical Safety BC in its work to build confidence in a safety system that supports the wellbeing of British Columbians. Phil believes that safety is a shared responsibility, and everyone has a role to play. It’s the behaviour and decisions of people in the safety system that influence the safety of technical equipment throughout its lifecycle, and Phil is committed to creating a more effective, equitable, and efficient safety system for all 

By focusing on client experience and risk-based assessment practices, Phil invests in working relationships to advance the understanding and management of safety risks. He has a deep regard for the knowledge and capability of clients and employees, and believes that developing a system of engaged safety system participants is vital to maintaining confidence in the safety system. 

A graduate of Royal Military College, Phil began his career in naval operations in the Royal Canadian Navy. Before joining Technical Safety BC in 2009, he spent 10 years leading business strategy development and continuous improvement consulting engagements in the forest products, helicopter, and heavy equipment industries. Phil has an MBA from the Richard Ivey School of Business, and obtained a Chartered Director designation from The Directors College.  

Presentation: Navigating Unchartered Waters: Growing BC’s Safety System in Stormy Conditions 

Phil Gothe is in year 2 of his role as President and Lead Executive Officer (LEO) at Technical Safety BC (TSBC). Phil started his career as a naval officer in the Royal Canadian Navy, and at this year’s round table he will share valuable insights from his journey piloting navy vessels, and now Technical Safety BC.

Phil believes that safety is a shared responsibility, and everyone has a role to play in its growth — especially in the current economic and environmental conditions. As leaders in the safety system, he will share his thoughts on how EHSBC members can continue to advocate for BC’s technical safety and further enhance the safety system for all British Columbians.
