After the AGM, members recognized the upcoming “Day of Mourning” with a presentation from Threads of Life.
Wynny Sillito from Threads of Life has worked as a first responder and paramedic. She recounted an accident at a Northern Alberta gas plant, where a co-worker was involved in a chemical accident, resulting in toxic chemical burns to his skin. That operator talked about how important it was for him to get home to his wife. He spent the night alone in the hospital. His wife also spent the first night alone at home unable to travel due to weather. Wynny received chemical reactions burns herself from the fumes in the air. Eventually her burns healed, and her hair did grow back. She does have one small scar and has auditory and sensory flashbacks to that incident. Workplace accidents leave trail of unlucky people in their wake.
In 2014, two co-workers fell into wastewater well and didn’t make it. That day she found out about Threads of Life, who help people through the healing process. She knew then she wanted to get involved to help other people.
Good reminder to employers as leaders to protect people that work for you. Safety comes from the top down.
